- 1. Background In today's society, parents, especially those with young children, face a number of challenges that can lead to social isolation. The pace of modern life, the diversity of working patterns, and the fragmentation of family and friendship networks make it difficult to create local social ties. Parks and public spaces remain privileged places where parents can meet up with their children, but exchanges between them are not always natural or regular. With the emergence of digital technologies and mobile applications, it is possible to facilitate these social interactions, by connecting parents who share the same concerns, needs or desires. The ParkBuddies app aims to fill this need by creating a simple, user-friendly platform to facilitate these connections in a local, family-friendly setting. 2. Challenges The ParkBuddies project addresses a number of current social issues: Parental isolation: Many parents, especially those with young children, can feel isolated, especially in big cities or after periods of change (e.g., the arrival of a child, a move). ParkBuddies offers them an easy way to meet other families and forge local social ties. Community support: By facilitating exchanges between parents, the application contributes to the creation of informal support networks. These networks enable the sharing of experiences, information and resources, as well as mutual support. Enhancing public spaces: Parks and playgrounds are places where children can flourish, but also places where parents can bond. The application encourages better use of these spaces by boosting social interaction. Family well-being: The mental and emotional health of parents and children is directly linked to the quality of social relationships. By offering opportunities for regular exchanges, ParkBuddies contributes to better overall family well-being. 3. Opportunities The ParkBuddies project opens up numerous opportunities at different levels: A. Social opportunities Strengthening local communities: By creating opportunities for parents to meet, the application strengthens the social fabric of neighborhoods. This can reduce isolation, improve local quality of life and create strong bonds between residents. Diversity and inclusion: The app can encourage interaction between parents from different social and cultural backgrounds, promoting inclusion and diversity in public spaces. Intergenerational support: ParkBuddies could evolve to include not only parents of young children, but also grandparents or other extended family members who wish to get involved in the social life of the neighborhood. B. Economic and technological opportunities Development of an innovative platform: Developing ParkBuddies as a mobile application offers the opportunity to create an innovative product that could be replicated in other cities, or even other countries. The tool can include scalable functionalities, such as geolocation, event recommendations or collaborations with municipalities. Partnerships: The application opens the way to collaborations with local players (municipalities, associations, family service companies) to organize events and activities for parents and children. Potential monetization: Although the project has a social objective, it could eventually include paying options for certain premium services (organization of private events, promotions for local activities, etc.), while remaining free for its basic use. C. Environmental opportunities Sustainable use of green spaces: By encouraging families to make greater use of parks and public spaces, ParkBuddies contributes to the enhancement of these places in a perspective of sustainable development and positive appropriation of urban space. 4. Application features The ParkBuddies application will offer the following functionalities: Geolocation-based connection: Users can see which parents are close to their location and ready to meet other families. Profile creation: Each user creates a profile with basic information about their family, children's ages, and interests. Instant messaging: Integrated messaging makes it easy for parents to contact each other and set up appointments at local parks. Events: Users can organize or participate in group events (picnics, outdoor games, walks). Personalized recommendations: Based on location, the application recommends local parks, events or activities. 5. Expected impact Increased interaction between parents: By encouraging encounters in public spaces, the app will strengthen social ties in neighborhoods and improve family well-being. Reduced social isolation: Especially for parents who are mobile or isolated, ParkBuddies will serve as a platform for breaking down isolation by offering quick and easy social connections. Creation of active local communities: The app will help build supportive communities where parents can help each other and exchange tips, recommendations and resources. Conclusion ParkBuddies meets a real need to strengthen social ties for parents of young children, while enhancing public spaces and contributing to community cohesion. The project has great potential to improve the quality of life for families in the city, offering them a simple solution for organizing meetings, sharing moments and integrating fully into local life. Thanks to its innovative approach and expected social impact, ParkBuddies represents a real opportunity to create more connected and resilient communities.
